I've found a few house auction portal sites who claim to have all the latest info on home auctions, police auctions etc... but they are subscription sites and I'm a bit wary that they'll take payment and provide rubbish information. Any pointers much appreciated.

I do not think I would do that. In my state we have a web site like that with out a fee of any kind.
